In my last intervention, I interrogated the challenges confronting dispensation of justice in Nigeria, particularly the disturbing gap between judgments delivered and justice perceived. Today, I take the conversation a step further, perhaps into a more uncomfortable territory, by examining the role of legal practitioners themselves in the steady erosion of the justice system. If the court is the temple of justice, then lawyers are its ministers; and when ministers abandon their sacred calling, the temple itself becomes desecrated. It is a settled principle, both in legal philosophy and professional ethics, that a lawyer is not merely an advocate for…

Leaders and members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) joined a large demonstration in Abuja on Wednesday, protesting decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which they said undermine democracy and the party’s internal leadership. Hundreds of Kwankwasiyya members also participated. The demonstration saw participants singing Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots!”, despite the fact that it was replaced on May 29, 2024, by President Bola Tinubu…

The Federal Government has increased its planned borrowing for the 2026 fiscal year to ₦29.2 trillion, up by ₦11.31 trillion from earlier estimates, as lawmakers finalise the 2026 Appropriation Bill. The upward revision is tied to a wider fiscal deficit emerging from the latest budget framework. Total government expenditure for 2026 is now projected at approximately ₦68.32 trillion, while expected revenues stand at about ₦36.87 trillion, creating a significant gap that will be largely financed through borrowing. The new borrowing plan was outlined in the Appropriation Bill approved by the National Assembly and detailed in the House of Representatives’ Order…
